Painful periods? Five Symptoms that Point to Endometriosis as the CauseĀ

Painful periods are often dismissed as a normal consequence of being a menstruating individual. However, these symptoms can be debilitating in some, and have a profound impact on the lives of those affected. A proper investigation is crucial in determining the cause of the pain. Endometriosis, a condition that affects about 10% of women, should always be considered when painful periods are a concern.Ā

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. Although it is often thought of as a pelvic condition, because Endometriosis involves hormones, the immune system and inflammation, which means it can affect more than just the pelvic cavity. Recognizing the various symptoms can lead to a timely diagnosis and more effective management.

Here are five symptoms that might indicate Endometriosis as the cause of your painful periods

1. Migraines

Those with Endometriosis are more prone to migraines, which can be linked to the fluctuating hormones with the menstrual cycle. However, due to altered pain pathways throughout the entire body in those with Endometriosis, migraines can occur at any time throughout the cycle.Ā Ā

2. Gastrointestinal Issues

Endometriosis can affect the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain. This is often due to changes in the microbiome that we see in individuals with Endometriosis. These symptoms can fluctuate with the hormonal changes of the cycle, but can also be month-long and are often misdiagnosed as IBS.

3. Chronic Pelvic PainĀ

Unlike typical menstrual cramps that occur just before or during menstruation and end with the period, Endometriosis-related pain can persist throughout the month. It is common for women with Endometriosis to experience pelvic pain with defecation, urination and sexual intercourse as well, and pain often radiates to the lower back and hips.Ā

4. Bladder SymptomsĀ

Those with Endometriosis are more likely to experience bladder-related symptoms such as painful urination, increased frequency and urgency. In some cases, we see Endometriosis lesions on the bladder itself. Another condition that commonly leads to chronic pelvic pain known as Interstitial Cystitis or Bladder Pain Syndrome is common among those with Endometriosis.Ā

5. Infertility

Infertility is a common and significant concern for many women with Endometriosis. It can impact fertility due to structural changes, ovarian function changes, hormonal changes, inflammation and immune changes. Women struggling to conceive, alongside other Endometriosis symptoms, should consider being evaluated for the condition.

Many women with Endometriosis go undiagnosed, and suffer from a wide variety of chronic symptoms that diminish their quality of life.Recognizing additional symptoms beyond painful periods is essential for early diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment.
